In the period of widespread use of distance technologies in higher education in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, stimulating motivation to learn has become an urgent task. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the possibility of increasing motivation to learn by clearly setting tasks when performing monitoring activities. In the 2019—2020 academic year, the implementation of e-learning was evaluated as part of the transition to distance learning, namely, the electronic control of knowledge in terms of performing calculation work in the discipline “Accounting and analysis” by the full-time students of the second year studying in the field of Economics at the Ural State University of the Railway Transport (USURT). The study involved 95 students (4 academic groups). Based on the analysis of these students’ motivation for learning and their achievements, the author hypothesizes that the use of the proposed software will contribute to their improvement. When using old (traditional) learning technologies, students’ activity decreased by 10 % in the first three weeks of the experiment. The use of a new computer program led to its growth by more than 20 %. The educational sphere is closely related to the conditions of the external environment, that is, it is subject to a special form of evolutionary change — co-evolution. This happened in spring 2020, when all education became distant, which could not but affect the students’ motivation for learning. In distance learning, the importance of individual creative cognitive activity of the student increases. The use of distance technologies in the educational process is possible only if the students are highly motivated to learn. The proposed computer program contributes to it, especially when making appropriate adjustments to the virtual educational environment used by the University.
