The article presents the experience of teaching Spanish as a second foreign language to students of a language university. It considers the process of teaching a second foreign language based on knowledge in the first foreign language (English) in teaching phonetics, grammar, reading rules and vocabulary of the Spanish language at the A1—A2 levels. The popularity of the Spanish language among the students of the Institute for Foreign Languages at the Moscow State Pedagogical University sets before the teachers the task of effectively teaching Spanish as a second foreign language the students using their practical experience, skills and abilities acquired while mastering the first foreign language (English). Many years of experience in teaching Spanish as a second foreign language has clearly shown the effectiveness of techniques for introducing vocabulary and grammar based on English. An attitude is created that students will be able to use the experience gained in mastering the first foreign language in the further study of other languages. Reliance on knowledge of the English language system greatly facilitates the process of mastering Spanish for students. Removing difficulties at the first stage of learning a new foreign language is a methodological priority, as well as reliance on the basis of knowledge about the language system of the first language. At the same time, the teacher is tasked with optimizing the learning process, effectively forming intercultural competence, using the knowledge of the first foreign language, in this case English. The results obtained can be used in the design of programs for teaching Spanish as a second foreign language in a language university based on the interrelated teaching of two languages.
