The article deals with the relevance of multimedia technologies in modern online education at the university. The authors consider the issue of the etymology of the concept of multimedia, as well as the main stages of computerization and digitalization of the higher education system. The history of the introduction of multimedia technologies in the education system has not been studied enough, and today the scientific base on this issue is rather weak. The reason for this is the blurring of the concept of multimedia technologies, the fuzzy distinction between information and communication and multimedia technologies, the evolution of the content of the term “multimedia technologies” itself, and so on. The main dates for the introduction of information, communication and multimedia technologies in the system of higher education are given. The authors present different points of view of modern researchers on the concepts of multimedia and multimedia technologies, and also analyze the research trends in the field of multimedia technologies in the online education format. The need to introduce multimedia technologies in education is dictated by modern requirements for the quality of education and the needs of students and teachers. In this regard, the renewal of traditional methods and forms of education, which hinder the effectiveness of the educational process and reduce interest in learning, is becoming relevant today. The use of multimedia technology is becoming the only way to effectively deliver an increasing amount of information to students in the context of the current trend towards the reduction of class hours. In multimedia learning situations, the role of the teacher is changing: from being the primary and only source of knowledge, the teacher is becoming one of these sources, and the teacher is increasingly acting as a facilitator or mentor in the learning process.
