The modern education system is aimed at social and cultural development of an individual in the information society, training professional specialists, capable not only to possess knowledge, but also to be able to acquire, analyze and use the information obtained, learn and self-educate throughout life. The authors focus on the tasks set for educational institutions of higher education, which mandatorily include not only creating conditions for students to implement independent cognitive activity, but also teaching the target audience to set educational goals, choose information and educational resources, engage in self-development and constantly self-improve. The role of self-education of learners is increasing due to the transition of reproductive education to the field of independent cognitive activity. Nowadays the educational model is actively shifting from “teaching” — “one is taught” to self-educational “learning” — “one learns”. The article analyzes the concept of “independent work” both by scientists of the Soviet national pedagogical science and modern researchers. The authors reveal the concept of “independent work” with the focus on personal growth of a student based on andragogic and humanitarian and anthropological approaches. The principles of development of a specialized course in the English language for independent work of 1st and 2nd year students in educational institutions of higher education of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs system are described. The aim of the special course is to intensify self-education through independent work, the skills of which are considered today as a tool of self-organization in continuing education.
