This article characterizes the readability of a written electronic hieroglyphic text, describes the readability parameters that cause Russian-speaking recipients difficulties in perceiving and understanding a written text in Chinese, which should be taken into account in the learning process. The fundamental works are considered, on the basis of which a formula for the readability of an electronic hieroglyphic text is derived, applicable to its digital format. It is noted that in order to derive the readability index, it is necessary to take into account both the hygienic requirements for paperwork and the requirements put forward by the printing industry. The purpose of the study is to clarify the components that make up the concept of “readability”, as well as to derive a formula for the readability index applicable to two types of text: printed and digital. Theoretical understanding of the key research problem and the application of methods for analyzing and monitoring the process of written hieroglyphic communication has established that the quality of understanding the electronic hieroglyphic text is lower than the understanding of its printed counterpart, which, in turn, requires consideration when selecting texts in the course of teaching foreign languages. The novelty of the obtained conclusions lies in the derivation of the readability formula for electronic hieroglyphic texts. The conclusions drawn can serve as a basis for the formation of the Chinese language teachers’ own approaches for teaching students to read electronic hieroglyphic texts, as well as new methodological developments that allow selecting texts in the learning process and removing difficulties in the implementation of the processes of receiving an electronic text in Chinese by Russian-speaking recipients. The prospects of the study are related to the need to find effective strategies for teaching reading electronic texts in Chinese as part of the professional activities of future bachelors studying Chinese.
