The article examines the history and current state of teaching English in Indian schools, as well as the problems and prospects for its development in modern Indian society. The purpose of the article is to review the history of teaching English in India, the features of its teaching, the purpose of study and to present existing issues that impede its development. In this study, systematic and historical approaches were applied, descriptive, comparative-historical and problem-chronological methods were used. Some researchers believe that the emergence of the English language in India is associated with the spread of the Christian religion in the country. Others link the emergence of English in India to the activities of the East India Company in the 17th century. Both concepts are complementary to each other and in both cases it has become necessary for the natives of India to be proficient in English. In one case, for knowledge of the basics of religion, in the other for public service. Ever since English was introduced into use in India, it has become the most important foreign language in the country. English language teaching has undergone changes in several stages: the first goal was religion, then public service, and now it is a universal language that is used in almost all areas of life. The text describes the features of teaching English in India based on literature analysis, as well as situational analysis. Moreover, the author presents the existing shortcomings of the English language teaching system in India and the prospects for its development based on the works of Indian teachers-researchers. |
