ADAPTATION OF NATIONAL AGRI-FOOD SISTEMS TO CHANGING CONDITIONS

The article discusses the problems of adaptation of national agri-food systems (AFS) to post-Covid conditions. The coronavirus pandemic has led to major changes in the global economy, which overall declined by 4.5% in 2020. The maximum negative trends appeared in the most economically developed countries of Europe, the USA and China in the first half of 2020. Starting from 2021, we can talk about an almost complete restoration of the overall picture, however, with heterogeneity and imbalances in individual elements of the economic structure. The most affected during this period were capital-intensive industries with a long economic cycle, with complex, inert technologies and logistics connections. The agriculture and food industries were less affected by the coronavirus pandemic due to inelastic demand for food. Some industry risks were derived from restrictions on movement and communication, the closure of restaurants and hotels, which led to losses for individual farms and agricultural complexes, but in general, the overall decline in the industry’s production and financial indicators did not exceed 3%, and was restored following the results of the economic cycle. The Covid-19 pandemic has not introduced any additional serious risks to agricultural production; however, it has increased the likelihood, frequency and scale of existing problems, and also revealed the main factors of sustainability and vulnerability of the national AFS of the leading countries in agricultural production. Adaptation of national AFS to external changing conditions is mainly the result of the implementation of scientific and technological progress by AFS subjects.
