PEDAGOGICAL VALUE OF LITERARY TEXTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIOCULTURAL COMPETENCE OF STUDENTS

Annotation:

The article presents an analysis of the research conducted in the 2019/2020 academic year on the impact of the systematic and targeted use of authentic foreign language literary texts on the level of development of the socio-cultural competence of students. The study was conducted on the basis of the student body of the college of the Siberian University of Consumer Cooperation in Novosibirsk. 52 first-year college students took part in the pedagogical experiment. The object of the research was the process of forming the sociocultural competence of students. The subject of research was the use of foreign language literary texts in the process of teaching a foreign language for the development of socio-cultural competence of students. The paper presents various approaches to the content and structure of the socio-cultural competence of an individual and considers the possibilities of authentic foreign language texts for the development of the level of sociocultural competence of students. The process of teaching students to read authentic foreign language texts is presented in the form of a methodological model, which has been successfully implemented in pedagogical practice. On the basis of the diagnostic data obtained, recommendations were developed for carrying out educational work on the prevention of intolerant behavior among students of educational institutions. The paper present stages and results of the conducted pedagogical experiment on the development of socio-cultural competence of first-year college students, based on the use in the educational process of authentic foreign language literary texts, selected taking into account the received results of the students’ diagnostics. The author pays special attention to the diagnosis of the structural components of the sociocultural competence of students and their analysis (cognitive, linguo-cultural, communicativeactivity, and reflexive components).It is concluded that the use of foreign language literary texts in the process of teaching college students a foreign language significantly increases not only the level of development of their socio-cultural competence, but also contributes to an increase in motivation for learning foreign languages in general.
