The article discusses an approach to professional medical education using data visualization, which allows the student to make an informed choice, to make a decision based on qualitative evidence. Within the framework of solving research problems, the concept of “visualization” was analyzed from the standpoint of technology, method, and process. The study proposes the authors’ definition of visualization as a combination of verbal perception of information with subjective and object observation, reflexive introspection, didactic projection in the digital and objective environment for the purpose of self-improvement, self-adjustment, enhancing cognitive visual sensations, training attention, achieving cognitive insight and increasing awareness of perception. The authors paid special attention to a number of scientific works devoted to the classifications of the visual presentation of information and chose the most suitable for working with medical data: deterministic functional dependencies, including time series of data and statistical distributions. In addition, attempts were made to use several methods of computer visualization when working with numerical data within the discipline of “medical informatics”, which allowed students to draw correct diagnostic conclusions in problems of a medical nature by means of visual evidence, converting numbers into a graphic representation. Patient data imaging has allowed the transition from traditional medicine to evidence-based medicine, linking the individual doctor’s experience with independent evidence from systematic studies. Thus, the use of the principle of evidence at any level of decision-making should become common for the preparation of educational materials in the course of working with medical data.
