This article presents the authors’ reflections, based on the works of a number of researchers, on the importance of career guidance in self-determination of children with hearing impairments, since career guidance work in correctional and mass schools has significant differences due to the peculiarities of the development of children with hearing impairments, in particular, the insufficient level of speech development and, as a consequence, the difficulty and limitations of professional choice for such children. The hypothesis of the study is the assumption that the process of formation of professional self-determination of children with hearing impairments will be carried out most effectively if benchmarking technology is included in this process. This technology makes it possible to carry out an internal audit of children’s inclinations to a particular type of professional activity, as well as successfully design individual educational and professional routes. The article presents the results of an empirical study, held on the basis of the Pskov region State Educational Institution “Center for Special Education No. 1 Structural unit: Special (correctional) secondary school No. 5 of I and II types. The respondents of the study were school-age children with hearing impairments (deaf and hard of hearing children, with hearing aids and cochlear implants) and their parents. The study allowed us to identify these children’s main socio-psychological problems (speech insufficiency, overestimated or underestimated self-esteem, uncertainty, inability to make a choice, lack of knowledge about professions, weak motivation to implement their own plans, etc.) and difficulty with professional self-determination. To solve the problems associated with the difficulties of choosing a professional path, a program for professional self-determination of children with hearing impairments using benchmarking technology was developed and implemented. This made it possible to direct career guidance work towards the development of cognitive interests of deaf and hard of hearing children; to expand knowledge about professions and opportunities to achieve certain professional preferences. |
