THE ROLE OF SCIENCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMY: THEORETICAL ASPECTS AND PRACTICE

Today, the development of science not only contributes to the continuous updating of modern economic theory and the increment of scientific knowledge, but also plays an important practical role: it significantly affects various spheres of human life, the development of industries, the creation of products, services, public goods and distribution channels. Scientific developments predetermine the country`s and its regions’ trends. The paper reveals the importance of science for the development of the national economy, in view of new challenges. The examples show that science has always acted as a productive force of the economy. The state acts both as a customer and organizer of scientific research and development, forms institutional, financial and organizational environment for its functioning and integration into society and the real sector of the economy. It is substantiated that under the influence of science at present, the methods of production and distribution channels of goods continue to change significantly due to the introduction of innovations and the development of high technologies, automation, robotization and digitalization; gig-economy and the information economy are being formed. As a result, the culture of a new, digital person is being formed as a participant in the processes in a digital society. The paper defends the position that in modern realities the most fruitful is cooperation between academic institutions with enormous research and development experience, business structures implementing scientific developments in practice and government authorities that determine institutional and financial conditions of innovation processes.
