DEVELOPMENT OF ACADEMIC WRITING SKILLS IN THE PROCESS OF TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO POSTGRADUATES

Annotation:

The process of internationalization of higher education has affected all Russian universities. The participation of universities in international programs and the integration of advanced international practices helps improve the quality of educational programs and enhances the competitiveness of Russian universities. The article is dedicated to studying the problem of the possibility to develop effectively postgraduates’ academic writing skills while they learn a foreign language. The author emphasizes the fact that although a foreign language is studied in higher education at all educational levels, postgraduate students demonstrate a very low level of development of foreign language writing skills. The purpose of the research is to study modern scientific literature on this issue in order to determine the most effective teaching approaches, which resulted in the creation of the step-by-step training model in mastering the skills to create a scientific text using as the example the most popular type of academic writing abstract. The main activities of postgraduate students are concentrated on scientific research; therefore, the research competence development remains a priority when a foreign language is taught to postgraduates. The search of original scientific sources in a foreign language on the research topic prepared by postgraduates, studying these articles and creating scientific texts by summarizing the most important information contributes to the research competence development and foreign language one. As the results show, in the process of educational activities organized in accordance with the learning objectives, there is a positive dynamics in mastering academic writing skills. The effectiveness of the “peer feedback” approach to be applied in developing postgraduates’ writing skills is also noted, the use of this approach allows not only to improve the structural organization of a scientific text and foreign language linguistic competences, but also to overcome the psychological barrier in relation to creating a scientific written text.
