This article aims to characterize the current state of the higher education system in Egypt. The authors briefly outline the history of the creation of universities in the named state and identify the historical, economic and sociocultural prerequisites for the formation of the higher education system in Egypt. The work notes that the modern Egyptian education system is the product of three cultural heritages: British, secular Europeanized Egyptian and traditional Islamic. The modern stage of the development of the Egyptian higher school begins after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 (23 July Revolution), when the idea of national education began to develop in the state in question, freed from the British protectorate’s position that Egyptian education was meant to serve the interests of the British elite. The work notes that the country’s education system is closely related to the needs of the public and economic changes. The article reflects the main trends in the development of university education in the Arab state. The authors characterize the quality and competitiveness of Egyptian higher education in the modern world and identify the main problems of higher education in Egypt. In addition, the work presents the main classifications of modern higher schools operating in the country according to several criteria, which indicates the scientific novelty of this study. As a result, the article draws up a list of distinctive features of higher education in Egypt, identifies the central trends in the development of the country’s higher education, and outlines possible ways for its improvement and further development, determined by the current state of the political, economic, sociocultural situation in the said country.
