This study aims to generalize the concept of universal behavioral skills for entering the legal profession, as a set of skills manifested in professional activity and necessary for successful interaction in a professional environment. The article highlights the significance of identifying the components of universal behavioral skills as presented in three blocks of characteristics, their relationship with legal students’ personal qualities. The practical part presents a student assessment of universal skills for successful entry into the legal profession. The study was conducted on the basis of the questionnaire survey of law students. The results of the assessment on a 10-point scale allowed us to obtain valuable information on students’ ideas about the necessity of formation of their universal professional skills during the university education process and correlate them with their general ideas about the legal profession. Based on the analysis of the assessment of universal skills as most meaningful in legal specialties, it was possible to identify both the most prioritized and less preferable, from the point of view of first-year students, professional skills classified into groups of communication skills, self-management skills and effective thinking skills. There is statistically established expression of the skills most manifested in the legal profession and necessary for development, and the skills declared by students as already mastered in the course of the educational process: the skill of self-presentation, public speaking, information literacy, self-development, self-organization and self-management, the need for argumentation. These studies make it possible to optimize the theoretical and practical preparation of students for entering the legal profession through the acquisition of universal behavioral skills necessary in legal specialties.
