Annotation:

The article analyzes the practical experience of the Department of English Language and Professional Communication of Pyatigorsk State University in developing patriotic consciousness among university students through introduction of the national-regional component in foreign language training. The relevance of this task for modern Russian society is substantiated taking into consideration the assertion of such values as patriotism, citizenship, unity, courage, heroism, family and others as priorities. The key role of education in general, and the national-regional component of education, in particular, in developing patriotic consciousness among students is determined. The definitions of the concept of patriotic consciousness in modern science are considered. The components of patriotic consciousness, presented as a structural formation, are analyzed. The ways of updating the content of higher education are specified on the example of academic foreign language disciplines for various areas of training. The content of the authors’ program “Caucasus Diversity” is analyzed from the point of view of its potential for the purpose of forming patriotic consciousness in students of the training areas “Linguistics”, “Sociocultural Activity”, “Architecture”, and “Design”. The experimental work on its implementation in the educational process is described. It is revealed that, when integrated in foreign language disciplines curricula, the national-regional component contributes to the effective solution of the problems of patriotic education and the formation of patriotic consciousness. The functionality of a university foreign language teacher for the formation of patriotic consciousness within the framework of the taught disciplines is determined.
