The approaches and methods of modeling economic processes are analyzed, in which such information products as knowledge and innovations are explicitly present. Much attention is paid to the problem of quantitative assessment of knowledge. From the point of view of changes occurring in the world and Russian economy, the prospectiveness of the knowledge economy as a system that ensures a high level of a country’s competitiveness in the context of globalization is determined. Production knowledge is assessed as a complex multi-level cognitive system used by all economic actors: from the individual to the global. It is especially noted that the knowledge economy is a triad of markets: the knowledge market, the services market and the labor market, which cannot be considered in isolation, because they closely interact and intertwine with each other, the knowledge sector, according to many researchers, is a kind of problem solving machine. It is emphasized that these problems are diverse and difficult, therefore the organization of the knowledge sector must be flexible, dynamic — namely, the economy. It is concluded that in the knowledge economy, human capital, especially intellectual capital, plays significant role, in particular, the formation of wages essentially depends on creative abilities. Methods are considered that allow quantitative assessment of the innovation potential of regions and enterprises. It is proposed to combine approaches related to the measurement of knowledge with approaches related to the measurement of innovation. In conclusion, based on the analysis, it is stated that modeling of the knowledge economy is a young, promising area of science, which in the near future will be developed intensively and dynamically and will find its application in the real sectors of the economy and high technologies.
