Profile professional career development of the graduates of Russian universities is one of the most important tasks of the regional management system, which is associated with establishing a balance between education and the municipal labor market. The fact that about 50 % of Russians do not work in their specialty necessitates a systematic analysis of the problem of the non-core career development. The article analyzes the statistical data on the relationship of the main work with the specialty received from graduates in the most popular areas of training, describes the most common job search channels, discusses the negative consequences of the lack of a systematic and sustainable interaction between the educational services market and business. Based on our own research and analysis of the state statistics, the main problems of professional profile formation of the university graduates are identified. The results of the study showed that most of the respondents are going to get a job in their specialty (67.3 %). However, if due to a number of reasons specialized employment is not be possible, a significant part of these respondents expressed their readiness to change their type of activity (87.8 %). The main reasons for changing the profession include the lack of vacancies in the acquired profession, low wages, inadequate conditions offered by the employer, the needs of applicants, and inadequacy with the requirements of the employer. In the final part of the article, recommendations are given on organizing the complex interaction of the educational system and the labor market. One of the ways to create a mechanism of direct interaction between young specialists and enterprises is through specialized internships that will help senior students to go through practice directly in their specialty and get additional job opportunities immediately after graduation.
