This article addresses the issue of transformations occurring in the Russian coal industry. The importance of their innovative orientation towards adapting the industry’s structure to future economic realities shaped by global trends is emphasized. The research aims to develop a methodology that enables a formalized representation of the readiness of individual groups of coal industry organizations to initiate the transformative process. This representation can be used to determine the directions for further industry development. Coal mining organizations make a significant contribution to national economy, energy security, and regional population welfare. The industry operates under conditions of economic instability, uncertainty, and ongoing systemic problems, with increasing influence of sanctions and the fourth energy transition. Accelerating the pace of structural and innovation transformations has become a pressing issue. The proposed methodology will serve as the basis for developing and implementing measures in this area. In accordance with the research objective, the study has developed a methodology for evaluating coal mining organizations based on determining an integrated indicator composed of several components that comprehensively reflect various aspects of their economic activities. The rationale for selecting and the significance of each of the 23 components within the developed methodology are justified. An approach to scoring these components is proposed by assigning their values to specific ranges. The methodology was tested using real statistical data from 176 Russian coal mining organizations. The results indicate that a smaller proportion of organizations (20 %) have a high degree of readiness to initiate structural and innovation transformations. The remaining organizations lag behind in the integrated indicator, with significant disparities observed in several evaluation components. It was found that readiness for transformations depends more on the scale of an organization’s economic activities than on the method of coal extraction or its status as a town-forming enterprise. |
