The article is devoted to the definition of the intercultural competence, its structure and diagnostic tests which allow to measure its level. Due to cultural diversity intercultural competence for language teachers is one of the most important professional competences to obtain. In this work we measured the level of intercultural communication of 1st and 2nd year students of the linguistics faculty of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University and found out that the level of the components of the intercultural competence was high. The results of the test were used to decide whether the students are ready to be volunteers at the international events. There is a lot of discussion about communicative competence but for future teachers of EFL it is also quite important to know about culture of the language they learn. Learning about history and culture of other countries can lead to more openness and tolerance. Intercultural competence components are the following: empathy, tolerance, cognitive knowledge and strategies for effective communication. According to A. Fantini, whose test is used to measure the level of intercultural competence, it includes knowledge, attitude, skills and awareness. The results of the study were used to prepare a program for students who are going to work as volunteers at international events. |
