The article discusses the methodology for training master’s students studying in the direction 44.04.01 “Pedagogical Education” of the Mathematics and Computer Science profiles to use methods of mathematical statistics to process the results of pedagogical measurements. The authors propose to study methods of statistical data processing step by step, in accordance with the following scheme: consideration of the general essence of the method and practical examples of its application from the field of education; formulation of various hypotheses in accordance with the research objective; taking into account the conditions and limitations of using the method depending on the type of scale, type of sample, sample size, type of statistical method, etc.; execution of each step of the algorithm to implement the selected method, taking into account the selected conditions and limitations of the research problem being solved. The implementation of the proposed methodology is discussed in the article using the example of studying Student’s t-test, which has a significant number of limitations, features and conditions imposed on its practical application. In this context, it is determined and when considering the methodology is taken into account that Student’s t-test is used to analyze quantitative data, requires a normal distribution (is parametric), can be used to test the hypothesis about the difference in mean values only for two groups, can be used only when the variance in both groups is equal. At the same time, it is emphasized that accurate conclusions about the equality of variances, as well as about the normality of the distribution, cannot be made without the use of special techniques. The effectiveness of the methodology proposed by the authors is confirmed by the results of the final certification of master’s students in the discipline “Diagnostics of educational results based on big data”, within the framework of which methods of statistical data processing were studied. Evaluation of the master’s students’ performance results showed that the students correctly identified the criteria and indicators necessary for conducting experimental work within the dissertation research, correctly formulated statistical hypotheses, correctly selected the appropriate statistical methods and processed the results of pedagogical measurements.
