DEVELOPMENT OF POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING IN THE PROCESS OF TEACHING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Annotation:

The article analyzes some circumstances of postgraduates’ critical thinking development in teaching a foreign language. The author underlines the specific features of postgraduate training in relation to developing professional and research competences. Critical thinking skills are of particular importance for the performance of scientific research in postgraduate studies and in future professional activities. The teaching of foreign language in postgraduate studies is given special attention. The article emphasizes that foreign language teaching is an integrative process that allows postgraduates to deepen linguistic knowledge and explore professional research aspects. It is emphasized that research activity is based on searching information to produce a basic concept on the topic of the dissertation. In the author’s opinion, the use of tasks that help postgraduates to analyze and rethink information, promotes the formation of skills for applying critical thinking strategies. It is proposed to implement the methodology for developing postgraduates’ critical thinking based on reading scientific articles. Step-bystep fulfillment of learning activities helps postgraduates to master the algorithm of working with new information. Execution of tasks based on samples of scientific articles trains the skills of applying critical thinking strategies. Control of the formation of these skills is carried out in the process of the final oral presentation of the abstract of the article. Abstracting scientific articles allows postgraduates to successfully make the transition from reproductive to productive intellectual activity. The author notes the growth of motivation in postgraduates to learn a foreign language, because in the process of educational reading of scientific articles they master the practical experience of working with scientific information.
