The article is devoted to the problem of analyz-
ing the development of ninthgraders’ problemsolving skills
in order to identify current difficulties that hinder their fur-
ther education. The ability to solve problems (not only math-
ematical, but also chemical, physical, and economic) is a key
component of educational preparation. The article presents an
analysis of the level of development of problemsolving skills
among 9thgraders of various St. Petersburg schools who
studied in preparatory courses at the Natural Science Lyceum
of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The
study highlights cognitive processes that affect students’ ability
to analyze the problem statement, identify its key elements, and
build a logical sequence of actions for its successful solution.
The purpose of the study is to identify typical difficulties that
schoolchildren encounter when solving various mathematical
problems, as well as to develop recommendations for teachers
to improve the effectiveness of teaching this skill. The role of
motivation, individual characteristics of material perception,
and the experience of independent activity of students is indi-
cated. The research methodology includes complex diagnostic
measures, such as testing, interviews and observation of the
problem solving process in natural conditions of the educa-
tional process, a comparative analysis of the result of entrance
examinations for several periods is provided. The results of
the study show that a significant part of ninthgraders has
difficulties in solving problems which require the applica-
tion of theoretical knowledge in nonstandard situations. The
most common problems are: insufficient understanding of the
problem statement, inability to identify key elements, errors
in choosing a solution strategy and poor knowledge of algo-
rithmic techniques. The obtained results allow us to conclude
that it is necessary to change approaches to teaching prob-
lem solving, taking into account the peculiarities of modern
adolescents` thinking and the individual characteristics of
each student. The article may be of interest to mathematics
teachers, students of pedagogical universities, as well as any
specialists interested in improving the quality of education of
high school students. |
