Annotation: Article is devoted to the investigation of the problem of actualizing critical thinking skills using the example of preparatory tasks for the social studies olym- piad. The relevance of the chosen topic is determined by the lack of research that integrates three significant aspects of pedagogical research: the phenomenon of actualization, the category of “critical thinking skills,” and the speci fics of olympiad preparation. The purpose of the research is to theoretically substantiate the principles of designing tasks in social studies in order to actualize critical thinking skills in olympiad preparation. To achieve the stated goal, methods of theoretical analysis of scientific literature and conceptualization of the acquired knowledge were applied. The data obtained suggest that, in designing such tasks, it is advisable to: modify not a single but multiple tasks to enable the transfer of critical thinking skills to novel situ- ations; group these tasks into a coherent block, embedding through-line element in each to facilitate both near and far transfer of skills; employ both deep and surface isomor- phism as qualitative task characteristics to stimulate near and far transfer of skills; incorporate prompts within the block to cultivate sensitivity to task structure, thereby sup- porting both near and far transfer. Prospects for further research include the experimental design of tasks based on the proposed principles, testing of the designed tasks, and identifying the possibilities and specific fea- tures of transferring critical thinking skills within the context of social studies education. It is also recommended to examine the impact of interdisciplinary tasks on the development and trans- fer of critical thinking skills.
