The article examines the correlation between
parentchild relations and emotional wellbeing/distress
in younger schoolchildren, and provides a comparative analy sis
of the nature of parent-child relationships based on their emo-
tional wellbeing/distress. The authors consider the concept
of children’s emotional wellbeing in the context of parentchild
relationships.
Based on theoretical analysis, indicators of children’s emo-
tional wellbeing (selfesteem, anxiety, fears, aggression, alex-
ithymia, mood) were identified, which were used as a basis for
dividing children into 2 groups: emotionally healthy children
and children with signs of emotional distress.
The article presents the results of the primary diagnos-
tics of 132 younger schoolchildren in the Pskov District
of the Pskov Region using the projective drawing technique
“Nonexistent Animal”, according to which the children
were divided into two groups based on their emotional well
being/distress. To verify the results of the primary diagnostics,
a study was conducted in two groups of younger schoolchil-
dren on the main indicators of emotional wellbeing: the level
of anxiety according to the method of “Children’s version
of the manifest anxiety scale” and alexithymia according
to the Alexithymia Questionnaire, which made it possible to
verify these indicators in children of the two groups. The key
method of this study was the adapted questionnaire “Par-
entChild Interaction”, aimed at identifying the features of
parent-child interaction from the position of the parents them-
selves. The study involved 184 parents. Significant differences
are shown in the nature of the relationship between parents
and children with signs of emotional distress and parents
of emotionally healthy children on the scales: “emotion-
al distance closeness with the child”, “presence/absence
of cooperation between parents and children”, “consistency/
inconsistency in their demands” and “educational confronta-
tion in the family”. The data from the study made it possi-
ble to conduct a comparative analysis of the characteristics
of interaction between parents with emotionally healthy chil-
dren and parents of children with signs of emotional distress
and to draw a conclusion about the correlation of these signs. |
