The article studied the peculiarities of professional consciousness of the Russian servicemen on the materials of applied sociological research of military men of three cities — Moscow, Rostov‑on‑Don and Novocherkassk. Work motivation and professional qualities of servicemen, satisfaction with the profession and career prospects, perception of occupational risks are investigated. The study shows that the most common reasons for concluding a military service contract are pragmatic orientations, the attractiveness of this profession and the opportunity to make a military career, as well as civil‑patriotic attitudes. It is concluded that the Moscow military personnel demonstrate a greater degree of professionalization of consciousness, expressed in the emphasis on the content of work in professional motivation, the priority of achievement characteristics in career advancement, the value of professional competencies in the work of the military. The development of new organizational and technological forms and methods of work is not perceived as an increase in the workload. Less critical of the capital’s military personnel also assess professional risks in the army. Servicemen of southern Russian cities are more oriented to pragmatic and civil‑patriotic motives in choosing a military profession. In career advancement, an important role is assigned to ascriptive (familial, communication) characteristics. Rostov and Novocherkassk military men in the army profession more appreciate military‑corporate and normative‑value characteristics. The servicemen interviewed in the southern region more often note that army reforms are associated with an increase in the volume of work, without increasing wages. They are also less satisfied with the current level of their financial situation and are more critical in assessing their prosperity in the coming years than the Moscow servicemen.
