FUNCTIONAL MATHEMATICAL LITERACY AS THE BASIS OF FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICAL COMPETENCE

Annotation:

The urgency of this article is explained by the fact that intense use of mathematical knowledge in different scientific areas and in everyday life requires appeal to the issue of necessity of development of functional mathematical literacy of students starting from school. The goal of the article is in justification of theoretical aspects of development of the functional mathematical literacy of students based on development of mathematical competence. The analysis of literature demonstrated that the essense of concepts functional literacy and mathematical literacy determines the content of the concept functional mathematical literacy. The authors examined the structure and analyzed results of the largest international researches PISA and TIMSS for the recent period of their performance, as well as presented solutions of typical tasks. Based on the research, assessment of the level of development of mathematical literacy and the quality of mathematical training of the Russian students is provided. Requirements to the up-to-date functionally literate school-child are provided. The level model of mathematical competence of school children is described, on which basis the tasks from PISA are developed in mathematical literacy for appropriate levels. The authors concluded that results of the international researches can indicate the number of weaknesses in the approaches to mathematical training of the Russian school children, which should be eliminated and taken into account in designing the educational process and in development of educational programs for school children, as well as for the future teachers of mathematics. Results of research allow speaking about the fact that researches PISA and TIMSS are the tools of assessment of the general state of mathematical training of school children. The article can be of interest for teachers of mathematics and experts involved in examination of the issues of mathematical training of school children.
