The article examines the problem of training young men and women at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (NRU MGSU), Russian Federation, Moscow, by means of power sports, the state of the professional potential of students to engage in power sports; proves the relevance of solving this problem in connection with the introduction of innovative methods in higher pedagogical education, requiring a teacher to have a high level of proficiency in modern methods of finding, processing and using new approaches in professional activity. The analysis of scientific and pedagogical sources indicates that significant experience has been accumulated in the multi-level training of future athletes, but the theoretical and methodological foundations of the training of future athletes at the university are insufficiently studied. Many young men are engaged in power sports in university sections: weightlifting, athletic gymnastics, powerlifting, arm wrestling, kettlebell lifting, etc. The conducted analysis showed an average and high correlation of the effectiveness of competitive activity, which may indicate the influence of physical qualities on the condition of an athlete as a result of competitive activity. Taking into account the relationship and the results of special literature, we have compiled a set of exercises that is included in the preparation of student athletes for competitions by means of power sports. The exercises were used before each training session for 20—25 minutes for seven months. After completing the power sports program students of the experimental and control groups took part in competitions. At the end of the seven-month teaching experiment, the experimental group showed an increase in the level of development of athletic qualities and competition results.
