Annotation:

The constant changes in the modern society actualize the importance of students’ social and professional self-development. The issues of self-development, including professional development, have been and continue to be studied by many researchers in different fields of human and social sciences. Within the framework of this study we are interested in the view of educators. The authors point out that the publications of recent years consider various ways of forming students’ readiness and ability for social and professional self-development. But in spite of many developed mechanisms, such as the use of cultural and educational environment of the university, educational clusters, advanced training, not enough attention is paid to the use of the potential of foreign language training of students for this purpose. The article aims to define the content of students’ social and professional self-development in a technical university in the process of foreign language training, as well as to identify its factors and barriers. According to the authors, scientific novelty of the research consists in substantiating the content characteristics of students’ socio and professional self-development, such as future engineer’s professional self-determination, adaptation to participation in university life as a student; readiness to master the engineering profession, develop professional and flexible skills related to future professional activity; interest and desire to work in the field of engineering in future. The authors also identify the factors and barriers of students’ self-development in the process of foreign language training based on the analysis of literature sources on the subject, generalization of experience and survey of foreign language professors of Kazan National Research Technological University. Further research will be aimed at developing methods and approaches to stimulate students’ self-development.
