During the COVID-2019 pandemic, the educational system and the educational process underwent significant transformations, there was a massive forced transition of educational institutions to the distance mode of work, and consequently, a large-scale experiment for education digitalization was launched, its positive results are likely to be used further in the system. The events associated with COVID-19 showed how much important digital technology was in case of a rapid change in the common functioning processes of society. The analysis of the changes that occurred in higher education institutions in the area of the use of digital technology during the pandemic is relevant since the process of the digital transformation of higher education institutions is irreversible and continues expanding. Within the framework of this research, we conducted a content-analysis of the websites and curricula of Volgograd higher education institutions and a questionnaire survey of students in order to see how the digital educational environment of higher education institutions had changed, as compared to the data obtained in our research in 2019. Scientific studies show that digitalization came into the management process of higher education institutions long ago, many scholars consider the issues of distance and online learning, however, rapid changes in e-learning have occurred in the last two years, which was confirmed in the results of our study. Students’ independent work has been transferred to electronic form almost completely, part of the classroom workload is being replaced with online lessons, the teaching methods are changing. Meanwhile, the results of the research make us think about the possibilities and risks of the enthusiasm for e-learning and draw conclusions about the necessary methodological and technical support of the academic staff and the wider use of taskbased MOOCs uploaded on the open educational platforms of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.
