The article concerns the problem of level differentiation in teaching schoolchildren a foreign language. On the example of our textbook “Steplighter” we describe the system of multilevel education for 10th-11th grades of Russian secondary schools, which can optimize their learning activities. In the process of learning, the teacher has to face certain difficulties in teaching students of multi-level classes, which can be overcome by using a set of methods and teaching tools based on various types of student differentiation. The application of a differentiated approach during the whole time of learning at school and the use of level differentiation of students at senior classes allows more intensive development of spontaneous oral and written speech skills, and makes learning more practice-oriented and interesting for the student. Practical experience of using a Steplighter multilevel tutorial has shown the potential for developing students of different proficiency levels. By ensuring the implementation of learning opportunities for students in the area of their nearest development, we thereby help to overcome the problem of teacher focus either on strong or weak students in multi-level classes and create the necessary conditions for the effective realization of multi-profile teaching using various forms of differentiation in high schools. The usage of a multi-level textbook within a unified educational environment allows the teacher to manage the learning process more effectively in both relatively homogeneous and heterogeneous classes, as well as to build individual educational tracks for some students.
