IMPLEMENTATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING IN A NON-LANGUAGE UNIVERSITY: ANALYZING CHAT GPT IN THE CONTEXT OF AUTOMATED WRITING ASSESSMENT

Annotation:

The role of artificial intelligence in modern society is increasingly significant, digital technologies are penetrating many spheres of activity, including higher education. Integration of tools based on artificial intelligence is possible both for students and teachers. Innovative applications serve as auxiliary tools in the educational process, contributing not only to the effectiveness of learning, but also to the optimization of pedagogical processes. In particular, for a teacher, the introduction of digital systems is expedient for solving routine tasks, including planning and automatic assessment of written works. This paper analyzes the potential of GPTchat application in English language teaching in a technical university to support teaching activities in assessing students’ written tasks. An empirical method based on experimental interaction with a chatbot to determine its ability to identify and correct errors in written works was applied. The study was conducted by analysing 10 written works of third-year students of National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”, in which line and bar graphs were considered. The results of the experiment showed that artificial intelligence can successfully act as an additional tool in checking written works in the context of grammatical, punctuation and stylistic errors, provided that the command and technical competence of the teacher are correctly set. However, the system is not capable of correcting semantic errors, and does not always respond correctly to queries by providing erroneous answers, as demonstrated in the study. Thus, ChatGPT can act as an assistant in the educational process, but its abilities are limited and cannot fully replace the teacher in checking written works.
