This research addresses the internationalization
of higher education, highlighting the transnational mobility of
students as a key aspect. The study aims to develop a scale for
intercultural communication competence and to assess the current
state of such competence among foundation year students
in Russia in terms of their awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills. Additionally, it seeks to analyze variations in intercultural
communication competence among students of different
genders, academic majors, and nationalities. This empirical
study employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative
and quantitative research methodologies, to evaluate
the intercultural communicative competence of foundation
year students at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
The assessment was conducted using a scale comprising
14 direct questions, designed to measure 4 factors of intercultural
communicative competence. Data collection was
facilitated through a comprehensive questionnaire survey,
which was subsequently analyzed using SPSS 27.0 software.
The survey’s scales showed high reliability, with Cronbach’s
alpha coefficients ranging from 0.706 to 0.779 for the 4 factors
and 0.829 for the total scale. Foundation year students
in Russia demonstrated average intercultural communicative
competence. Gender differences were negligible in intercultural
communicative competence, yet females displayed
heightened intercultural awareness. Students majoring in
language studies showed higher competence levels than
those in humanities, economics, medicine, and engineering.
Nationality significantly impacted intercultural skills, with
CIS students outperforming those from French-speaking
Africa, English-speaking Africa, China, Vietnam, Portuguese-
speaking Africa, Asia (excluding China and Vietnam),
Latin America, and Europe. |
