The paper’s main topic is teaching English
to law students with regard to professional orientation and
the use of extralinguistic factor. The goals and structure of
professional foreign language training for law students are
analyzed. Within the framework of the course “Foreign language
in the field of jurisprudence” students should master
the lexico-grammatical minimum necessary for working
with legal documentation. Students should develop skills of
professional communication in a foreign language. One of
the urgent problems of teaching legal English is the need to
select vocabulary taking into account the requirements of
the labor market and the sphere of education, as well as the
contexts of professional activity in a foreign language. To
address the shortcomings of legal foreign language teaching
materials, the author proposes the creation of lexical minimums
based on current legal sources. These minimums will
take into account the differences between the American and
British systems of law, and will also contain definitions, comparisons
with the Russian system of law. The extralinguistic
factor includes knowledge about the culture, history, traditions
and customs of the native speakers of the target language.
This helps to better understand the meaning of words
and expressions, as well as their correct use in different
communication situations. Examples of vocabulary exercises
designed to teach legal terms in English, taking into account
extra-linguistic aspects, are presented. The experience of
implementing a scientifically substantiated and experimentally
tested set of lexical exercises is described, the purpose of which is to help learners to master the vocabulary of a foreign
language in the context of cultural and social features of
the country where the language is spoken. |
