COMPOSITIONAL ABILITIES: STRUCTURE AND THE PROBLEM OF INTERPRETATION

Annotation: The article provides a rationale for the interaction of the terms ‘composition’, ‘ability’ and ‘compositional ability’. The views of professionals from the fields of knowledge that define art pedagogy are presented: artists, teachers, psychologists. The problem considered in this article is insufficiently clear, variable disclosure and interpretation of the term ‘compositional abilities’ and understanding of their role in the process of formation of creative qualities of personality in the context of the educational process. The variability of interpretations of this term used in art education is determined by the versatile nature of creative activity in different fields of art and in design, as well as by the interpretations of the concept of ‘composition’ and ‘abilities’. To solve the problems of development of this ability it is necessary to have a clear understanding of its essence, structural components, and mechanisms, which subsequently allow designing the educational process competently and effectively. We consider in detail the opinions of artists-theoreticians about composition as a structural, ideological and figurative construction of an artwork, as well as their representations as a process of creation of a work organizing its integrity and as a meta-subject discipline in art education. The conclusion of psychologists about the essence of ability as an inseparable connection of potential and its development in activity is also considered. The authors note that the formation and development of ability is determined by the freedom of choice of the method of action, and its manifestation — in the success and efficiency of this action. On the basis of the research of these concepts, we have designated the term ‘compositional abilities’ and its peculiarities as a meaningful constructive activity. In the context of art education and education in general, the development of this ability allows the individual to recognize the interrelationships hidden behind the visual series, to understand and organize the structure of the form, including artistic form.
