Annotation:

The research is dedicated to the problem of equalization of the initial level of language skills of students of non-linguistic universities and faculties by organizing the self-guided work in accordance with the structure of communicative competence seen as the final goal of language education in modern higher school. We analyze the changes in the requirements concerning the quality of education. Three levels of the competence in question are revealed and their components are distinguished. We offer a classification of exercises to be used for the self-guided work of students.
