Annotation:

The article establishes an objective necessity of transformation from a traditional educational paradigm to a competence-based approach in training modern day specialists. The authors define the role of a foreign language in developing key competences of a professional worker in the XXI century. Special attention is given to communicative competence, to the forms and methods of its development, its criteria and parameters of assessment. Being based on personal experience, the article explains the essence and potential opportunities of such active methods of education as teambuilding, decisionmaking, problem-solving, as well as the discussion method and the method of problem-solving. As a result of the analysis the process of selecting the optimal method depending on the task of forming the life skills and abilities in order to transform them into a real competence is systematized.
