We consider it proven that the harm of information technologies in mass education exceeds its benefits. However, in circumstances of pandemics, distance learning technologies have become the only way not to interrupt the educational process, and the search for pedagogical techniques and technologies to compensate for the shortcomings of distance learning is becoming more and more relevant. “Retro technologies” can be successfully applied in distance learning, addressing in parallel two relevant problems for distance learning, namely the tendency of students to plagiarize and the lack of interaction of learners with a constant reality. The article presents the results of a pedagogical experiment showing the effectiveness of providing information with the use of “retro technologies” in the process of distance learning. The research took place on the basis of Ural State University of Architecture and Art in 2019—2021. Within the framework of “History of Fine Arts” course, the undergraduate design students in the experimental groups carried out tasks based on modeling a constant reality: building models of architectural structures from various materials available “here and now”. Students of the control group studied the same topics on 3D-models, educational films, photographs of monuments, diagrams, plans with comments from the lecturer. The results of the final testing in the experimental groups were significantly higher than in the control groups. This article describes a pedagogical technique based on modeling of constant reality — the layout of an architectural structure from improvised materials, which proved its effectiveness during distance learning in 2020/2021 academic year. The use of “retro technologies” in distance learning is an effective means of correcting the shortcomings of digital tools.
