The article is devoted to the currently relevant university problem of using the case method in the system of higher education. The pilot study presents developments on the introduction and use of the case method as a leading technology in the higher education system. The advantages and effectiveness of using the case method in relation to traditional pedagogy based on lectures, its expediency in countering the superficial approach in teaching and the ability to create an in-depth attitude in teaching are presented. The work used a set of research methods (theoretical and empirical), including methods of comparative analysis, allowing to determine the influence that a lecture course and a case method course have on an indepth learning approach and on superficial learning approach. 56 students took part in the experiment. At the formative stage, two groups of students were involved: one control group and one experimental group. The results of the experimental work are aimed at the implementation of the case method as the leading technology for the educational process and research activities in the higher education system. The authors conclude that the case method is widely used in business schools around the world and has become their hallmark. In the modern Russian system of higher education though, as the authors point out, there is insufficient empirical data regarding the use of the case method. The authors come to a consensus that the case method is more effective than a lecture and its use requires further reflection.
