The article presents the results of a study of the didactic functionality of proverbs and sayings. The authors outline the concept according to which: 1) proverbs (as a special form of oral folk art) are a mechanism for fixing and transmitting diverse and contradictory (both positive and negative) experiences of emotional and value attitudes of many generations and different ethnic groups; 2) proverbs should be functionally considered as structural units combining factual and subscript information. Literal information in proverbs is concrete-figurative information; subscript information accumulates the abstract-figurative meaning of a given proverb or saying. The article shows the methodology of work on the inclusion of proverbs and sayings in the classroom. The purpose of using proverbs and sayings in the educational process is to develop students’ critical thinking. The essence of the proposed methodology is the analysis of the proverb in order to identify (reveal) against the background of the factual information another part the concept (“kernel”). The authors identify and reason functions of proverbs and sayings as structural units of the developed personal experience of emotional and value attitudes determining their use in higher school conditions in the formation of universal competences. In the pedagogical process of higher education, proverbs can illustrate the teaching material of many academic disciplines. Criteria for choosing proverbs are: their content should model various life situations (real and predicted), the experience and comprehension of which is due to the interaction of the emotional and rational sides of consciousness. The teaching, modeling, developing, regulatory, communicative and diagnostic functions described by the authors manifest themselves in the formation of the universal competences and the experience of students and cadets’ emotional and value attitudes to objects and phenomena of the surrounding world in the conditions of competent organization of work with them.
