The study is devoted to the problem of sustainable development of rural areas of an industrial region, defined as municipal districts within the industrially developed regions of the Urals, with the predominance of agri-food industries in most of the territory and employment of more than half the population in agricultural production, regardless of the share of agriculture in GDP and GRP. Sustainable development of rural areas in industrial regions is a consistent process of improving the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the quality of life and parameters of the agri-food system in order to ensure economic and food security. Diversification not only reduces the specific risks of agricultural production (seasonality, duration of the economic cycle, etc.), but can also become one of the strategic directions in this case. This, in turn, leads both to an increase in living standards and improvement of the parameters of the necessary level of food security in terms of achieving the quality, quantity and affordability of food. According to the results of the study, the indicators of profitability and efficiency of economic entities that open their own processing, packaging and trade in addition to the main agricultural production, increase in proportion to the volume, scale and level of additionally developed activities. The limitation of this process in agriculture is the shortage of own sources of financial resources, and the attraction of borrowed funds leads to the risk of insolvency. Nevertheless, diversification is becoming more widespread in the economy of rural areas of industrial regions, allowing the subjects of agri-food system to improve their financial, economic and socio-economic indicators.
