The mastering of information competence by medical students in the process of developing foreign language professional communicative competence is one of the targets of foreign language education at university. The development of information literacy, communicative-cognitive skills and information competence on the basis of authentic and semi-authentic foreign language specialized textual material determines the effectiveness of the educational and cognitive process as well as the high-quality preparation for future professional activities. The successful implementation of educational activities aimed at developing the information competence of medical students is ensured by students’ knowledge and rational use of information strategies within the framework of the step-by-step work with a foreign language profession-related text, also in the conditions of electronic hypertext space. Solving complex and multi-component problems of training reading to form information competence of medical students on the basis of a foreign language specialized text involves the use of different types of reading in the practice of foreign language education (reading for details, skimming, scanning for general information, scanning for details; analytical and synthetic; integration, discourse, etc.). In the process of working with a foreign language medical text it is necessary to rely on the basic information strategies, rationality and orderliness of the activities carried out for gaining knowledge and optimizing time resources. The work with a text includes searching, analyzing and processing information; classification and structuring of the data; application of the information in new situations of interaction with the surrounding world, including the professional activities. The formation of information literacy and the motivational-value attitude towards professionally significant information occurs when students demonstrate self-motivation, self-regulation, self-organization and self-control while processing important information. If students analyze and improve the products of the independently organized work with a foreign language profession-related text without being regulated by the teacher, it ensures the formation of the individual style of perception, processing, interpretation and evaluation of information based on the subjective experience.
