METHODOLOGY OF USING SPEAKING CLUB ACTIVITIES AT A NON-LINGUISTIC UNIVERSITY

Annotation:

The article presents a way of introducing speaking club activities into a foreign language class at a non-linguistic university. The topicality of research issue is defined by the insufficient interest to the subject of the foreign language among students of non-linguistic universities, as well as their poor level of English and few hours of classroom teaching being a distinctive feature of non-linguistic syllabi. Nowadays, many ways of enhancing students’ motivation to master a foreign language are applicable in tertiary education classes. Among them are extracurricular activities in the language studied, role plays, participation in international students’ forums, etc. Utilizing speaking club activities in a non-linguistic university class is defined as an area worth researching. The aim of the study is developing a methodology for using such activities and its practical evaluation in groups of non-linguistics students. Introducing a variety of interviewing activities in accordance with the students’ level of English is aimed at solving a number of such methodological tasks as increasing students’ motivation, turning the learning process into an enjoyable activity, perceiving the language studied as a means of communication and getting knowledge, learning by social interaction, decreasing the level of classroom anxiety. Differences between a speaking club session and a typical class are formulated, a review of the works of Russian and foreign researchers is presented. The evaluation procedure is described and its results are interpreted. Application of speaking club activities in a university class is proved effective. Practical guidelines on applying the methodology are provided.
