The purpose of the study is to determine the features
of the development of a positive self-concept in athletes with
musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The study materials include
contemporary publications by Russian and foreign scientists
in the subject area under study. To achieve the goal, methods
of theoretical analysis and generalization of contemporary knowledge in the subject area under study are used. The
psychological patterns of the development of a positive selfconcept
in athletes with MSDs are identified: the inclusion
of individuals with MSDs in sports activities contributes to:
increased self-efficacy; social integration and reduced isolation;
the development of internal motivation; the correction
of body image through the cognitive restructuring of positive
experiences; the experience of emotional well-being through
the satisfaction of three basic needs: autonomy (the feeling
of freedom of choice and control over one’s life); competence
(the experience of one’s effectiveness); and belonging
(the feeling of belonging to a group) and the acquisition
of new life orientations. The psychological mechanisms
of the development of a positive self-concept in athletes with
MSDs are revealed: self-knowledge; self-acceptance; selfesteem
and self-efficacy; self-regulation; social identity; emotional
and motivational mechanisms. It is shown that the deve-
lopment of a positive self-concept in athletes with MSDs
occurs in a sequence from the awareness of their uniqueness
to the search for self-confirmation resources, to personal
achievements, to increased self-esteem, to the development
of internal control, and to the formation of a positive selfconcept.
Four interrelated areas (cognitive, emotional-evaluative,
regulatory, and social) of development of a positive
self-concept in athletes with MSDs are identified. The study
of the qualitative uniqueness of the self-image in people
with MSDs who are engaged in sports allows not only to
expand the scientific understanding of their personal development
processes, but also to increase the effectiveness of psychosocial
rehabilitation programs through sports activities. |
