An important outcome of the educational process
in modern schools is the development of students’ scientific
literacy, which we understand as a person’s ability to use
the knowledge and skills acquired throughout life to solve
a wide range of real-life practical problems.
The purpose of article is to theoretically substantiate,
develop, and test the solution of contextual problems
by schoolchildren as a means of developing their scientific
literacy. The development of functional literacy in Russian
education began to be actively explored in the early
2000s. One of the most important types of functional
literacy
is scientific literacy, defined as a person’s ability
to understand and apply scientific knowledge and methods
to understand natural phenomena, their willingness
to be interested in scientific ideas, and to actively participate
in social life on issues related to the natural sciences.
One way to develop scientific literacy is for schoolchildren
to solve contextual problems, which examine a specific life
situation related to the student’s sociocultural experience
and require the mandatory use of existing subject knowledge.
The article proposes algorithms for creating and solving contextual
problems. The authors also present the outcomes of an
educational experiment aimed at developing schoolchildren’s scientific
literacy through solving contextual problems. The contextual
problems proposed for schoolchildren to solve were created
and compiled by the authors. The pedagogical results obtained
by students solving contextual problems are virtually identical to
those measured in the development of scientific literacy, demonstrating
the effectiveness of their use in the educational process. |
