The higher education market in Russia
is extremely competitive; therefore, it is crucial for universities
to meet the needs of their target audience – students. This
article examines the extent to which newly created university
campuses in Russia respond to the identified needs of students.
The study is based on an analysis of three universities included
in the federal project “Creation of a Network of Modern
Campuses” (Ural Federal University, Baltic Federal University,
Novosibirsk State University), for which the construction
and outfitting of campuses is planned for 2026–2027.
The empirical basis consists of student reviews posted on the
Yandex.Maps service, including both positive and negative
assessments. To identify the main needs of university students,
a content analysis was carried out using the NotebookLM
large language model, which made it possible to build “heat
maps” for the frequency of mentions of key themes for each
university. The analysis of needs showed that, along with the
high importance of infrastructure, a significant role is played
by needs related to the quality of teaching, the organization
of services, and communication with university administrative units. Campus opportunities most fully address the demand
for modern infrastructure, comfortable living conditions, services,
and a cultural and communicative environment, but only
partially correspond to expectations in terms of teaching quality
and management practices. It is concluded that campuses
are a necessary but not sufficient condition for increasing student
satisfaction. The effect of the federal project “Creation
of a Network of Modern Campuses” will be maximized only
if the development of campus infrastructure is combined
with targeted measures to increase university staff salaries,
improve program content, enhance teaching practices,
and raise the quality of administration and interaction culture. |
