In the modern economic space, the overproduction of goods and services and excessive human consumption of planet resources are a serious problem. This causes both environmental and social crises, as well as material problems for the manufacturers themselves. In this regard, it is important to study the historical stages of the consumption process itself and to identify the transformation processes of the modern stage of consumption. The relevance of this article lies in the insufficient attention paid to consumption issues, despite the fact that the problems of consumer activity are no less important for economic growth and sustainable development of a society than the issues of production and investment. In this article, the authors tried to formulate the factors of the emergence and dynamic growth of the “collaborative consumption economy„. The analysis provides a brief overview of the theoretical understanding of consumption in economic theory. Classical and neoclassical schools, as well as institutionalism in different schools and angles, analyze the category of consumption, and identify certain characteristic features of this phenomenon. A historical analysis of the development of consumption is also presented, in the framework of which the main stages of the development of society were identified: agricultural, industrial and post-industrial. As a result of the analysis, the main factors of the appearance and development of the “sharing economy„ were identified. The transformation of consumption forms, including into the form of collaborative consumption economy, is due to the consequences of the social evolution of a socio-economic, environmental and technological nature. As a result of the study, the main factors that contributed to the emergence and development of the “collaborative consumption„ in that model, in the modern model, were identified.
