The article is devoted to the problem of finding methodological tools aimed at obtaining valid information about the educational environment as a system of meanings for students. To solve this problem, the research is carried out by many modern teachers and psychologists, noting the importance of both formalized and projective graphic methods for solving various research problems. In our study, we focus on the possibility of using a graphical technique called “Topogramme”, as a methodological tool. The advantages of this method are compactness, simplicity of conducting and processing data in comparison to methods that provoke the respondent to socially positive responses. For comparison we used three methodological tools: the method of subjective assessment of the realizability of basic values (SARofBV), the technique of “Topogramme” and an associative experiment. According to the “Topogramme” method, respondents were asked to place smaller circles in a circle of a certain diameter, which are significant elements of the educational environment of the university for the respondent. In addition, they were proposed to write several words that they associated with each element of the educational environment. Those were subsequently processed using content analysis, and the data obtained were compared with the results of the graphical methodology. The sample respondents were 67 students of two Moscow universities studying at the IT faculties. As a result, significant correlations were found between the indicators of the methods used, indicating the following: 1) high values for the subjective assessment of basic values by students; 2) the dominance of elements related to the value or physical component, and not to the social one; 3) the acquisition of psychologically relevant information by the graphical method and by the associative experiment. This makes it possible to consider “Topogramm” as an independent and complementary methodological tool for studying the features of the psychological representation of the educational environment of the university by students, the use of which is particularly valuable in the context of distance learning.
