This article examines the evolution of scientific
approaches to defining the essence of competition and competitiveness
in economic theory. Based on a comprehensive analysis
of the works of classical, neoclassical, and contemporary Russian
and foreign researchers, key interpretations of these categories
are systematized, reflecting the gradual transition from
a narrowly economic understanding of competition as a form
of rivalry between economic entities to its interpretation as
a complex, multi-level, institutionally determined, and dynamic
process. It is emphasized that in modern conditions, competition
goes beyond purely price mechanisms and is increasingly
determined by innovation, the level of digitalization, the quality
of management, branding, and the degree of customer focus.
Particular attention is paid to distinguishing between
the concepts of competition and competitiveness, as well
as identifying their dialectical relationship in the context
of a transforming market environment, intensifying globalization
processes, and growing environmental uncertainty. Existing
methodological approaches to assessing competitiveness
at various levels of the economic system—from individual enterprises
to industries and national economies—are examined,
taking into account the specific features of the service sector.
This article substantiates the relevance of rethinking these
categories in the context of the digitalization of the economy,
the development of platform business models, and the increasing
role of intangible assets. This is particularly significant for
the hotel industry, characterized by a high degree of competition,
dependence on the quality of customer experience, and the need
for continuous innovation. The author’s definitions of competition
and competitiveness are formulated, reflecting a systemic,
reproducible, and integrative approach to analyzing these economic
phenomena, thereby expanding the theoretical basis for
their study and enhancing the practical significance of the results. |
