The article presents a review of the scientific literature and an analytical approach to the study of the tolerance problem in modern society, as well as the methodology for diagnosing tolerance as the psychophysiological stability of a person’s identity. Tolerance to stress can be considered as the most important personal indicator that determines the level of exposure to stress. Analysis of the problem state showed a lack of knowledge of the tolerance diagnosis in a competitive activity. The development of theoretical concepts of tolerance to mental stress, as well as adequate and effective psychological technologies of diagnosis and the formation of tolerance in a competitive activity requires a broad empirical basis. However, at the moment existing empirical studies cannot adequately provide it. The main reason of this is the insufficient development and illumination in the scientific and methodological literature of the relevant methodological tools for the study of tolerance in the field of sports. In addition, the psychological methods by which this kind of research is carried out, do not always meet the specific requirements of sports activities. In this regard, we tried to choose a complex of psychological techniques, that meet the requirements of the tolerance diagnosis to mental stress in a competitive activity. For this purpose, a set of techniques was used to identify the mechanisms of self-regulation: emotional intelligence, distraction tolerance, personal anxiety, mental reliability, strength of motivation, emotional state, perseverance and insistence, strength of character, intelligence and intuition. In addition, these techniques can serve to performance evaluation of the tolerance formation to mental stress. The article is of interest to a wide range of readers — teachers, doctoral students, undergraduates, teachers, psychologists, trainers and other professionals working in the field of higher and additional education.
