Annotation:

The article discusses protocol officer’s activity and analyzes the importance of translation component within intercultural communicative competence. The conducted surveys among specialists and the analysis of a number of works that consider this professional activity, allowed us to assert that the intercultural communicative competence of the specialist contains specific translation knowledge and skills that can be considered within the framework of translation competence. The required competence has a number of specific features and differs from the professional translators’ or interpreters’ competence and therefore requires special developed methods and techniques for its formation. A discursive approach is suggested to form the translation component within intercultural communicative competence of the protocol officer. The approach allows us to analyze oral and written diplomatic texts from discursive positions and determines various genres of diplomatic discourse that are necessary for the protocol officer and where translation knowledge and skills play vital role. The analysis makes possible to prove the presence of the translation component in the composition of its professional competence, as well as to identify its specificity and difference from professional translation competence. The significance of the research is to expand the concept of intercultural communication competence within protocol officer’s activity, including its translation component. It allows to professionally orientate the learning process at the universities and prepare students to meet the modern requirements of the specialist in the diplomatic field. When writing this article, the following methods were used: theoretical (generalization and analysis of research on translation studies, linguodidactics and didactics); empirical (study and generalization of experience in teaching a foreign language to protocol officers).
